Lets go digging in Tel Aviv! Known for its infamous parties, there is a lot of record trading going on in Tel Aviv with occasional record fairs for second hand vinyl on top. If you are looking for rare Israelan records from the 60s and 70s, the Third Ear store is your first address.

Please introduce yourself: What’s your name and your position?

Greetings! My name is Oren Adar-Burla and i manage the rock-pop and vinyl department in our store.

What’s the name of your record store?

The Third Ear.

Where are you based?

We are based in Tel Aviv, Israel and we have another store in Haifa and one in Jerusalem.

Do you have a website? – Please tell us the URL!

Third-ear.com

Which music styles are you selling and since when?

We sell every available music style, both new and second hand since 1987.

Are you specialised in any specific music style? Do you sell records that are hard to find anywhere else?

As mentioned, we sell everything but tend to specialize in psych, prog, classic rock and alternative. We have a Jazz department in our store that carries LPs too. We sell quite a few hard to find records especially rare local stuff from the 60s and 70s.

How many records you got in store?

Here in Tel Aviv about 5000-6000 and another 5000 in our store in Haifa.

Why did you decide to deal with records/work in a record store? Is it just love? Just business? Just …?

I’ve been working in record stores since the age of 14 back in the mid 70s fueled by my love of music and records…in my case it’s just love but it pays part of the rent sometimes….

Who are your customers? How old are they? Who is your most famous client?

All ages and all walks of life…famous clients? Local musicians and celebrities as well as almost any foreign artist performing here…Thurston Moore bought loads of records when he visited us…a few weeks ago it was the guys from Mercury Rev. Over the years we had quite a few guests either visiting, signing autographs for fans or playing in our store…Jethro Tull, Porcupine Tree, Zappa Plays Zappa,Sean Lennon, Faun Fables,Smog, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club,Stacey Kent, David Murray, John Mclaughlin, John Zorn,Holger Czukay, Mike Patton, Faust,Calexico to name a “few”…

Where do you get your records from?

The majority of our records are second hand and we buy them from local people and we have distributors in the U.S.A and Europe. We also deal directly with certain labels and musicians.

Do you go digging yourself e.g. at flea markets?

When time allows, yes.

Are you connected to other stores? Do you exchange interesting, rare records?

Not really, no. Stuff just tends to come in…

Do you have an archive system for your records? Where do you store them?

No archive. Just alphabetical order and we store our stocks in special drawers.

How do you recognise an interesting record?

Experience…been in the buisness for more than 35 years….(AAAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!)

Do you take any regular actions for preservation?

Care is all you need.

Any tipps for cleaning a dusty, old record?

Strong stream of warm water with simple hand soap bar. Best way to my mind.

Which one is your oldest record?

Age is relative….:)

Is there any special record you are craving for, thats still missing in your shops collection?

The next copy of whatever I’ll sell today…

Did someone ever steal records from you? How many and how did this happen?

It happens but not often.

Which one is your most valuable record?

An original copy of the Churchills in excellent condition.

How do you set your prices for rare records?

Supply and demand, condition, reason and experience.

Which one, do you think has the most beautiful cover?

Faust-Rien

What do you think will the vinyl business be like in the year 2030? Will there be just old and rare records or still new pressings?

Vinyl will stay in one form or another long after other formats are gone.

Please tell us your 5 favourite records

That’s an impossible task…top five lists are a medicore way of gaining confidence (or the false feeling of it) and a control tool of the industry.

Are you a dealer, collector and/or also DJ/producer? What’s your Artist Name?

I had a band called “Falafel Avantgarde“…in hibernation for the past few years.

Thank You….
